3. COUNT ALTHANN’S GAGE (Reine-Claude Comte d’Althann). One of the most richly flavoured gages, ripening end of September. Ideal for the gardener, as it is at its best eaten off the tree. Fruit is dark crimson speckled with golden dots. Dense blue bloom. Flesh is golden, firm and very sweet. Stone partially clinging. Tree of moderate growth. Good pollinator is Oullin’s Golden Gage. Originated in Hungary in the 1800s.
