Deacon's Nursery: Fruit Trees & Bushes
Original tree raised by John Perkins, Head Gardener to Lord Henniker of Thornham Hall, Eye, Suffolk, in 1840. It was, in fact, developed from a cider ‘pip’ found in the ‘must’ of a cider brew. Awarded a first class certificate by the R.H.S. in 1873. We personally have trees from the original, kindly given by the present Lady Henniker, in addition to stock given to us by a very good customer on the Island, which probably originated from Osborne House (Queen Victoria’s home). It is a well known dual purpose apple – similar to Ribston. Picked late September – will keep until January. Coloured green, becoming clear gold and yellow. Creamy white flesh. Coarse textured and good sub-acid flavour. Ideal for Christmas.
